Twenty-five suspected IS members detained in Istanbul September 12; terrorist threat remains high

On Tuesday, September 12, Turkish authorities announced that 25 suspected Islamic State (IS) members had been arrested during a counter-terrorism operation in Istanbul. Three of the suspects are allegedly high-ranking officials within the terrorist organization.
Context
Turkish security forces have intensified their counter-terrorism operations amid a resurgence of violence in recent years, especially in the south and southeastern provinces of the country. According to media reports, some 5000 alleged IS members have been arrested, 3290 of which are foreign nationals.
Turkey has suffered a number of terrorist attacks since the country's intervention began in northern Syria against the Islamic State. On January 1, an IS attack on a nightclub in Istanbul killed 39 people and injured 69 others.
As a reminder, a state of emergency has been effect since July 20, 2016, following an attempted coup d'état by members of the armed forces.
