Netherlands: Counter-terrorism exercises in Amsterdam Nov. 8-9

Event

Security officials announced that a series of counter-terrorism training exercises will take place in Amsterdam on November 8 and 9. The exercises will be conducted by police, military, and emergency service personnel, and involve the use of actors and training ammunition. The exercise will take place at the Haddock restaurant on Zeeburg Island and at the Europaplein metro station (not yet open to the public). Additional drills will take place at Amsterdam City Hall and police headquarters. A larger than normal security presence should be expected in Amsterdam, as well as possible transportation disruptions in the vicinity of the exercises. Context

Europe remains on high alert against the threat of terrorism following a series of high profile attacks across the continent in recent years. On August 17-18, two terrorist attacks were carried out in Catalonia, Spain, killing 15 people and wounding over one hundred in attacks in the Las Ramblas area of Barcelona as well as in the coastal resort town of Cambrils. IS claimed responsibility for the attacks. Significant attacks have also struck Belgium, France, Germany, and the UK in recent memory.

Individuals in Amsterdam are advised to anticipate (and not be alarmed by) an increased security presence and activity during the planned training exercises. Follow any instructions issued by local authorities and report any suspicious objects or behavior.​
