Warning

Event

On Sunday, November 19, the death toll climbed to 19 following the floods caused by Storm Zeno, which struck the Athens region beginning on November 15. The National Observatory of Athens has declared Zeno to be Greece’s most deadly weather event since 1977. The worst of the weather was expected to clear by Monday, November 20. According to local authorities, some 500 homes in the district of Mandra have been permanently damaged and roads remain blocked due to mud deposits. Recovery efforts are ongoing as of Monday.

Context

On November 15, towns and roads near Athens flooded following hours of torrential rain, trapping residents in their homes and causing substantial property damage. Schools and businesses were temporarily closed in the Mandra, Nera Peramos, and Megara areas and significant transportation disruptions were reported.

Advice

Individuals present in Greece are advised to keep abreast of weather forecasts, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to all advice issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
