Officials expect 500,000 people to demonstrate in Athens on February 4 over Macedonia naming dispute; avoid all protests

Warning

Event

According to security officials, approximately 500,000 people are expected to rally at Syntagma Square in Athens at 14:00 (local time) on Sunday, February 4, to protest the Republic of Macedonia's use of the word "Macedonia" in its name.

A heightened security presence, and transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the demonstration. According to officials, the Syntagma metro station will be closed on February 4, and hundreds of additional police officers will be deployed throughout the capital.

Context

A similar rally was held on January 21 in Thessaloniki, and was attended by approximately 100,000 people. Greece opposes the Republic of Macedonia's use of the word "Macedonia" in its name, since Greece has a region also named Macedonia, and claims that the Republic of Macedonia is appropriating the name of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon.

Advice

Individuals in Athens are advised to monitor developments to the situation and to avoid all protests as a precaution against potential violence. Adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
