Major flooding continues along Pilcomayo River in Salta province (northwest); 17,000 people evacuated

Flooding along the Pilcomayo River in the northwestern province of Salta is expected to continue for another week (as of February 5). Water levels remain at record highs - i.e. 7.5 m (24 ft), approximately double normal levels. The flooding was provoked by heavy rains in the river basin region, located in northern Bolivia, leading to the evacuation of some 17,000 Salta residents. The rain has stopped as of February 6 and improved weather is forecast in the coming days; flood conditions are not currently expected to worsen.
