Brazil: Floods and landslides in Rio leave three people dead Feb. 15

Heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro overnight on February 14-15, caused severe flooding in the city. According to local sources, at least three people were killed by landslides and falling trees. Power outages have also been reported. Major roadways in Rio de Janeiro, including Avenida Brasil, Linha Amarela, Linha Vermelha, and the Rio-Petrópolis Highway were also reportedly flooded, leading to major transportation disruptions. The most affected areas include the northern areas of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the Maracanã, Tijuca, and São Conrado neighborhoods. Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport (GIG) reportedly ceased operation overnight on February 14-15, diverting at least two international flights, and leading to residual flight delays.

Weather forecasts indicate that heavy rains are expected to continue through Friday, February 16, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides in the area. Further transportation disruptions and power outages are possible in Rio de Janeiro in the coming days.

Context

Torrential rains regularly hit the northeast of the country, as well as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, sometimes leading to deadly mudslides and floods. The rainy season in the northeast runs from April to July, and from November until March in the south and southeast.
