Winter Storm Skylar to hit northeast March 12-14; travel disruptions and power outages likely

Winter Storm Skylar is set to hit the northeast beginning on Monday, March 12. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for all or part of the following states: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York (including New York City), Massachusetts (including Boston), Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Up to 50 cm (20 in) of snow is forecast for some areas. Coastal flooding is possible. 

Significant flight disruptions are to be anticipated at airports throughout the area, notably March 13-14, including in Boston (BOS), New York-Newark (JKF, LGA, EWR), Philadelphia (PHL), Providence (PVD), and Hartford (BDL). Rail and public transit disruptions as well as hazardous driving conditions are also to be anticipated, along with potentially large-scale power outages.

Context

Skylar is the third winter storm to hit the region in the past two weeks, following Winter Storm Riley, which struck March 2-3, and Winter Storm Quinn, March 7-8. The storms resulted in major flight disruptions, days-long power outages, and at least eight deaths.
