Argentina: Nationwide demonstrations March 24

Event

Several thousand people are expected to demonstrate in cities throughout Argentina on Saturday, March 24, in remembrance of the victims of the 1976-1983 military dictatorship. The largest demonstration is scheduled to take place in Buenos Aires between Congress and Plaza de Mayo.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are anticipated in the vicinity of any demonstrations.

Context

According to official estimates, approximately 6000 people were killed, kidnapped, or "disappeared" during the government-sponsored crackdown on leftist dissidents while the country was under military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983. Some human rights organizations estimate that the actual number may be as high as 30,000.
