Somalia: Flood alert as of April 23 (Juba and Shabelle river basins)

UN issues flood alert for Juba and Shabelle river basin regions amid heavy rain in Somalia on April 23; rain forecast to continue through the end of the week

Warning

Event

Heavy rains in many parts of the Juba and Shabelle river basins have increased river levels and put affected areas at a high risk of flooding. Moderate to heavy rain has been forecast to continue from Monday, April 23, through Sunday, April 29. Towns on alert include Beledweyne, Jowhar, Doolow, Bardere, Buaale, Balcad, Kurtunwaarey, as well as the Lower Juba, Bay, and Bakool regions.

Context

Heavy rain and flooding is common in Somalia during the annual rainy season (April to June).

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, to avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and to adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tend to rise after periods of heavy rains.
