Niger: Increased terrorist threat against Westerners amid Eid al-Fitr

There is an increased terrorist threat ahead of and during Eid al-Fitr celebrations - scheduled to begin at sundown on either June 14 or June 15 depending on moon sightings. Attacks by Islamist terrorist organizations - such as the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) - targeting Western companies, assets, and personnel are possible in the coming days. Heightened security measures and continued military and counterterrorism operations are to be anticipated.

Furthermore, during this time, operations in Niger will come to a virtual standstill as Muslims gather to pray and celebrate with family and friends. Eid al-Fitr celebrations are likely to have a major impact on many businesses, stock exchanges, and public services, which may be unavailable or operating on a reduced schedule. Festivities (and disruptions) could continue through Saturday, June 16. As this period is typically marked by increased travel, heavy road traffic after sundown along with other transportation disruptions (crowded airports, etc.) is to be anticipated.

Eid al-Fitr celebrates the conclusion of 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting and remains one of the most important dates on the Muslim calendar. Generally speaking, the month of Ramadan is historically marred by a significant increase in terrorist threats and as such there is a potential for attacks to be carried out during Eid celebrations.

Terrorism has become an increasingly serious security threat in the Sahel region. JNIM and ISGS operate between Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
