Pro-choice and pro-life activists are holding rival rallies in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, June 13, as lawmakers debate legislation that, if passed, would legalize abortion in Argentina. Roadblocks have been in place since 00:01 (local time) on Wednesday, causing traffic disruptions on Belgrano, Independencia, San Juan, Corrientes, and Córdoba avenues. A heightened security presence has been reported near the Congreso de la Nación; authorities have closed the immediate vicinity to traffic. Bus disruptions have also been reported, and the Congreso subway station has been closed.

Pro-choice advocates are planning on staging a demonstration at Plaza del Congreso at noon. Some 100,000 people are expected to participate. Pro-life advocates are also holding subsequent rallies at Plaza del Congreso at 16:00, and at the intersection of Avenida Entre Ríos and Avenida Adolfo Alsina at 18:00. Additional demonstrations are possible in the coming hours.
