Honduras: Taxi driver protest in La Ceiba July 12 /update 1

Protests, strikes, and roadblocks by taxi drivers possible nationwide; demonstrations reported in Tegucigalpa and La Ceiba

Warning

Event

A four-hour strike by taxi drivers will be held in the city of La Ceiba on Thursday, July 12, beginning at 05:00 (local time). Drivers announced their intention to block the Danto River bridge. Other protests by taxi drivers have been held in recent days in the capital Tegucigalpa and further actions are possible in the coming days in both cities.

Context

Taxi union representatives in Tegucigalpa remain in talks with the municipal authorities over rising vehicle fees but negotiations appear to be at an impasse; a related demonstration was held on July 6, during which hundreds of taxis were used to block traffic in the city.

Advice

Individuals in La Ceiba and Tegucigalpa, and Honduras more generally, are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and to never attempt to cross a roadblock without authorization.
