Laos: Tropical Depression Son-Tinh to bring heavy rain through July 20
Tropical Depression Son-Tinh to bring heavy rain and high winds to central and northern provinces of Laos through July 20
Event
Tropical Depression Son-Tinh is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to the central and northern provinces of Laos through Friday, July 20. The Meteorology and Hydrology Department has accordingly issued a warning that there is a potential for flash flooding and landslides in areas affected by the storm. Consequent transportation disruptions, evacuations, and power outages are possible in central and northern Laos in the coming hours and days.
Context
Nearly 100 buildings, including a hospital, and four bridges have been damaged due to flooding and landslides caused by torrential rains on July 16-17.
Tropical storms and typhoons are common during the rainy season, which lasts from May through November.
Advice
Individuals in Laos, especially in the abovementioned areas, are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
