Greece: Wildfires continues to spread near Athens July 24 /update 3

Event

Wildfires that broke out near the capital Athens on July 23 continue to spread as of Tuesday, July 24. The fires are all located in the Attica region (e.g. areas of Rafina, Kineta, Panorama, Neos Voutzas, Agios Andreas, Nea Makri, Kalamos, Oropos, and Mati) and are being fueled by strong winds, dry conditions, and high temperatures. At least 50 fatalities have been reported as of 11:00 (local time) on Tuesday, with another 150 people having suffered injuries; the death toll will likely rise in the coming hours.

Flight disruptions at airports in the Attica region are possible; some flight were reportedly diverted from Athens International Airport (ATH) on Monday. Localized road closures, rail disruptions, and power outages are to be anticipated. Significant traffic disruptions have been reported on the main highways around the wildfires as residents evacuate the area en masse.

Additional, smaller fires erupted overnight July 23-24 in other parts of the country.

Context

Over 600 firefighters have been deployed to contain the blazes, along with water-dropping planes and helicopters, and rescue operations continue. A state of emergency has been declared for Attica.
