Major wildfires continue to rage near Athens (Attica region); at least 74 deaths as of July 24

Wildfires that broke out near the capital Athens on July 23 continued to spread in Attica on Tuesday, July 24. According to officials, the fires have affected the areas of Rafina, Kineta, Panorama, Neos Voutzas, Agios Andreas, Nea Makri, Kalamos, Oropos and Mati. Strong winds, dry conditions, and high temperatures have fueled the wildfires. At least 74 deaths have been reported at 23:00 (local time) on Tuesday, with another 187 people having suffered injuries. Significant traffic disruptions have been reported throughout Attica as residents evacuated the area threatened by the fires. Flight disruptions at airports in the Attica region are possible. Localized road closures, rail disruptions, and power outages are to be anticipated.
