Argentina: Mass protests in Buenos Aires August 8 amid abortion bill vote /update 4

Senate to vote on bill to legalize abortion August 8; mass demonstrations expected in Buenos Aires

Warning

Event

The Argentine Senate will vote on Wednesday, August 8, on a bill that, if passed, would legalize abortion. Mass protests by both “yes” and “no” camps are expected, notably in the capital Buenos Aires. Major traffic disruptions should be expected in downtown Buenos Aires, particularly in the vicinity of the Congress building. Some low-level violence (clashes, vandalism, etc.) is possible. Associated protests are also possible in the days and weeks following the vote.

Context

The lower chamber of Argentina's Congress narrowly passed the bill to legalize abortion up until the 14th week of pregnancy on June 14 after 20 hours of debate; hundreds of thousands of demonstrators gathered around the Congress building during the vote. Numerous other protests have taken place in recent days and weeks. The Senate is reportedly divided over support for the bill, with the “no” campaign having a slight lead. Currently, abortions are only permitted in cases of rape or when the life of the mother is in danger.

Advice

Individuals in Buenos Aires are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution and prepare for traffic disruptions.
