Argentina: National professor strike August 21-24

Professor strike at 57 public universities continues August 21-24; avoid associated protests

Informational

Event

University professors affiliated with the Conadu union (Confederación Nacional de Docentes Universitarios) continue to strike in all 57 of Argentina’s public universities as of Tuesday, August 21. The strike, expected to continue through the week, was called to demand better salaries amid high inflation. Classes are expected to be canceled August 21-24. Associated protests and “teach-ins” are likely, for example in Buenos Aires’s Plaza de Mayo and on university campuses.

Context

Sociopolitical tensions are high in Argentina and protests are regularly organized to denounce economic issues and policies implemented by the conservative government of President Mauricio Macri. Numerous teacher strikes have also taken place in recent months and years, notably in the province of Buenos Aires.

Advice

Individuals in Argentina are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution.
