Algeria: Cholera outbreak coming to an end as of mid-September

Algerian health officials reported the cholera outbreak in Algeria to be nearly over on Monday September 10

Informational

Event

On Monday, September 10, health officials announced that the cholera outbreak ongoing since the beginning of August in Algeria was nearly over. As of Monday, a total of 98 cases and two deaths had been reported, and only three people remained hospitalized. According to reports, the outbreak has been linked to the consumption of contaminated fruit.

Context

The cholera bacteria is typically spread via infected water supplies and induces acute diarrhea leading to severe dehydration, frequently resulting in death. The risk of death is greatest among people with compromised immune systems, such as malnourished children or those living with HIV. However, even among healthy adults, cholera can be fatal within a matter of hours.

Advice

To reduce the risk of contracting cholera, wash hands regularly, drink only bottled or purified water, and avoid eating raw or undercooked foods. Individuals who believe they may have contracted cholera should seek immediate medical attention.
