Tropical storms affect northern and central provinces of Laos September 18; heavy rains and consequent flooding, landslides, transportation disruptions, and power outages expected

Warning

Event

The remnants of Typhoon Mangkhut and Tropical Storm Barijat are forecast to bring heavy rainfall to northern and central provinces of Laos on Tuesday, September 18. Heavy rainfall is forecast to affect the provinces of Phongsaly, Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Oudomxay, Houaphanh, Luang Prabang, Xiangkhouang, Xaysomboun, Xayabuli, Vientiane, Bolikhamsai, and Khammouane; consequent flooding, landslides, transportation disruptions, and power outages are to be expected in affected areas. Further rainfall is forecast in many of the abovementioned provinces over the coming days, which may exacerbate flooding and flooding-related disruptions in the near-term.

Context

Flooding from monsoons and tropical cyclones are common in Laos from May through October.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to stay abreast of local weather reports, adhere to instructions given by local authorities, anticipate transportation, power, and telecommunications disruptions, and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
