Greece: Tsunami possible following 6.8-magnitude earthquake Oct. 26

Event

The US Geological Survey recorded an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale approximately 35 km (22 mi) southwest of Lithakia (Greece) at around 02:00 (local time) on Friday, October 26. The earthquake measured at a depth of 16 km (10 mi) causing "very strong shaking and the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center observed a sea level change of up to 15 cm (6 in) prompting a tsunami threat alert along south-western coasts of Greece. Avoid beaches and low-lying coastal areas. 

Advice

Individuals present in the impacted region are advised to monitor the situation, seek high ground, be prepared for further aftershocks, and heed all instructions issued by local authorities. During an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls, and do not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from any tall structures, such as buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
