Greece: Aftershocks reported following 6.8-magnitude earthquake Oct. 26

Event

The US Geological Survey has recorded several aftershocks ranging from magnitude 4.7 to 5.2 on the Richter scale following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake which struck 35 km (22 mi) southwest of Lithakia (Greece) on the early morning (local time) of Friday, October 26. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) observed a sea level change of up to 15 cm (6 in) prompting reports of low-level tsunami waves in southwestern Greece. Local media report limited localized damage, including power outages in Zakynthos, and structural damage on Strofades island. There are no reports of casualties as of 04:00 (local time). Further aftershocks remain possible.

Context

The region surrounding the magnitude 6.8-magnitude earthquake is in an active seismic zone and earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon. Observers have recorded 13 earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 or above in the region since 1900.

Individuals present in the impacted region are advised to monitor the situation, to be prepared for further aftershocks, and heed all instructions issued by local authorities.

During an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls, and do not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from any tall structures, such as buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
