Brazil: Rare tropical storm forms off southeast coast March 24

Event

Tropical Storm Iba formed off the southeastern coast of Brazil on Sunday, March 24, the first South Atlantic tropical storm since 2010. Although the storm is expected to remain offshore, strong winds and heavy rain are forecast to hit affected areas over the coming 24 hours, notably Bahia, Espírito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro states. Authorities have warned that winds of up to 80 kph (50 mph) are expected in coastal areas, with gusts as high as 97 kph (60 mph). Associated transportation disruptions are to be expected, including hazardous road conditions and flight disruptions.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports and anticipate transportation disruptions (e.g. flight delays and cancelations, limited visibility). Localized flooding is possible. In the event of flooding, keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
