Police kill ten bank robbers in São Paulo state April 4; heightened security presence to be expected over the coming days

Police shot and killed at least ten bank robbers who were trying to blow up automated bank teller machines at two banks in Guararema municipality (São Paulo state) early (local time) on Thursday, April 4. Around 25 assailants reportedly arrived at the banks in five armored cars to blow up the machines, armed with high-caliber rifles and body armor. The suspects also broke into a nearby home and took its residents hostage. No police were wounded during the operation and police managed to free the hostages. It was not immediately clear whether any suspects were in custody. A heightened security presence is to be expected in the affected area over the coming days.
