Event
Representatives of Brazil’s indigenous communities are protesting in the capital of Brasília through Friday, April 26. Around 4000 people have gathered near the National Congress and the Esplanada dos Ministérios since Wednesday, April 24, to protest ongoing violence targeting their communities as well as illegal incursions and deforestation in their territory. A heightened security presence has been reported around the demonstration site and the National Forces have reportedly already asked the groups to move their protest camps further away from the National Congress building. Increased security measures and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated in the area through Friday. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Individuals in Brasília are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions.
