Greece: 5.3-magnitude earthquake reported near Athens on July 19

The US Geological Survey recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake in Magoula (Attica) on Friday, July 19, at 14:30 (local time) at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). The earthquake occurred about 23 km (14 mi) northwest of Athens. Reports indicate that the earthquake knocked out telecoms and power in parts of Athens.

There were no immediate reports of injuries as of 15:30 and no tsunami warning was issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
