Spain: Forest fires in Madrid region threaten Guadarrama National Park August 5

The Community of Madrid activated Level 1 of the Civil Fire Emergency Protection Plan (INFOMA) as two forest fires broke out in the afternoon (local time) of Sunday, August 4, near Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. As of Monday, August 5, firefighters have reportedly contained one fire, which originated in Miraflores de la Sierra. Firefighting operations are still ongoing to contain the other blaze, which broke out near Real Sitio de San Ildefonso. The origins of the fires are still unknown. Some 300 hectares (740 acres) were reportedly destroyed by the fire as of Monday. 

Individuals have been asked to avoid the Guadarrama National Park area as firefighting operations continue. The M-611 roadway was briefly closed on Sunday to allow firefighters access to the blaze; similar closures and transportation disruptions are possible in the near future.
