Djibouti: Heavy rain and flooding kill nine in Djibouti City November 21-26

As of Tuesday, November 26, at least nine people have been killed in Djibouti City following heavy rain and associated flooding which have hit the country since Thursday, November 21. Between 150,000 to 250,000 people in the capital have also been affected by the floods, and infrastructure damage has been reported, notably on roads. Other parts of the country have also suffered damages, notably the Tadjourah region. The government has launched an emergency plan and has called on the military to assist those in needs.

Related disruptions, including transportation disruptions, infrastructure damages, and power outages, are likely in the coming days in affected areas.

Individuals the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
