US airstrike targets Al-Shabaab forces in Jilib (Middle Juba region) on July 29; further operations likely

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed that an airstrike was conducted against Al-Shabaab forces in the vicinity of Jilib (Middle Juba region) on Wednesday, July 29. At least one militant is believed to have been killed in the strike, and one other was wounded. AFRICOM stated that a compound used by the group was also destroyed. Al-Shabaab later released a statement claiming that three children had been killed in the strike, and although AFRICOM has stated that it is aware of reports of civilian casualties, it assessed that no civilians were killed or injured in the strike.

Further military operations against Al-Shabaab fighters, as well as attacks by Al-Shabaab, are possible throughout Somalia in the near term.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large areas of southern and central Somalia and stages frequent attacks across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the UN-backed government.
