Norway: Groups of protesters clash in Oslo August 29
Groups of protesters clash in Oslo on August 29; avoid all protests
Event
Counter-protesters and supporters of the Stop Islamisation of Norway (SIAN) organization clashed in Oslo on Saturday, August 29, during a rally held by the group. The event occurred outside of parliament, and hundreds of counterdemonstrators gathered nearby despite the presence of a police cordon. Although the two events were initially peaceful, police intervened after clashes broke out when a demonstrator tore pages from the Quran. At least one person was injured, and 20 others were arrested.
Further protests are possible in the coming days, and a heightened security presence with associated localized disruptions should be anticipated at any protest site.
Advice
Those in Oslo are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests or large gatherings due to the risk of associated violence, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities.
