Environmental activists staged protests on several major highways around Frankfurt on the morning of Monday, October 26, severely disrupting commuter traffic. Activists reportedly abseiled from a number of bridges over the A3, A5, and A661 motorways from around 07:00 (local time) on Monday morning, forcing police to stop traffic on the routes causing up to 10km (6 miles) of tailbacks. The group were reportedly protesting the felling of trees in a protected area of the Dannenroeder forest north of the city during the construction of a new highway.

Residual traffic disruptions are likely in and around Frankfurt in the near term. Further protest activity over the issue is also likely around the city in the medium term.
