Greece: Damage and injuries reported on Samos following 7.0-magnitude earthquake October 30 /update 1

Event

Local officials on the island of Samos report that at least ten people have been injured and multiple buildings and roads damaged following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck north of the island in the Icarian Sea on Friday, October 30. Deputy Mayor of Samos Ert Giorgos Dionysiou stated that a large part of a church in Karlovasi has collapsed, as have multiple buildings in Vathy. Numerous roads across the island are impassable after buckling and some coastal areas have experienced flood-related damage following a tidal rise following the earthquake. Further damage and injuries are expected as emergency personnel continue their rescue and recovery efforts.   

Aftershocks are likely in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Context

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in the Icarian Sea, 14 km (8.7 miles) north of the island of Samos on Friday, October 30. The quake struck at 11:51 (UTC) at a depth of 10 km (6 miles).

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g., under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger.
