Demonstrators gathered in Munich on Sunday, November 1, to denounce restrictions imposed by the government in efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). According to media sources, the rally was declared a religious service on Sunday due to the number of participants; open air church services in Bavaria are reportedly not subject to restrictions on the number of participants. The Querdenken movement called for protesters to gather at 14:30 (local time) from various locations including from Karlsplatz, Konigsplatz, Wittelsbacherplatz, Sendlinger Park, and Sendlinger Tor, and march to Theresienwiese for a rally at 16:00. Reports suggest approximately 1900 people gathered at Theresienwiese and the rally remained peaceful in nature, though police intervened to disperse the protest at around 19:00.

Further associated demonstrations are possible in Munich in the near term. A heightened security presence, as well as localized transportation disruptions, should be expected the vicinity of demonstrations.

Those in Munich are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate localized disruptions, and heed instructions issued by local authorities.
