South Africa: Trade union plans nationwide strike and protests, Feb. 24
Trade union plans nationwide strike and protests in South Africa Feb. 24. Ground travel and business disruptions likely.
Event
Members of the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) have called for a nationwide strike in South Africa, Feb. 24 to denounce the country's increasing unemployment rates and economic instability. SAFTU has called for all members to participate in a mass stay-away of workers beginning 0900; the action will coincide with the Minter of Finance, Tito Mboweni's budget speech scheduled to occur 1400 at the Parliament buildings in Cape Town, also Feb. 24. Organizers have also called for associated protests on the day; participants may gather in major cities, specifically in Cape Town around the vicinity of the Parliament buildings during Mboweni's budget speech.
Security forces will almost certainly deploy near protest or rally sites in central Cape Town. Localized transport disruptions are likely near any rallies, pickets, or street marches. Clashes between protesters and security personnel are possible as similar events in the past have degenerated in violence. Businesses near demonstrations could close as a precaution. Public transportation services may be impacted.
Government or health departments could close or offer limited support if affected by strike action. Confrontations are possible if non-striking employees attempt to cross picket lines or police seek to disperse protesters. Disruptions to business activity are possible due to high levels of worker absenteeism.
Advice
Liaise with trusted contacts regarding possible protest sites and strike impacts. Make allowances for traffic delays near any protest sites. Heed the instructions of security personnel in the affected areas. Leave the area immediately or seek shelter in a secure location if skirmishes take place nearby. Prepare for increased employee absenteeism Feb. 24. Plan for ground travel delays.
