Warning

Event

Authorities plan to defuse an unexploded World War II-era bomb in Frankfurt Feb. 21. Officials discovered the device in the Niederrad District during construction work on Saonestrasse. A security cordon will be established around the location of the device beginning at 0800 to facilitate the disposal operation.

No traffic will be permitted within the security cordon and all businesses and residences must be evacuated. Public transport normally routed through the area will be canceled or diverted. Frankfurt-Niederrad Station will not be accessible to passengers from 0800 and rail services between Frankfurt Central Station and Frankfurt-Stadion Station will be suspended from 1100, impacting S7, S8, S9, RE2, RE3, and RE70 rail services. Disruptions to ground transport serving Frankfurt Airport (FRA) are possible. Increased traffic congestion is possible in the surrounding area as drivers seek alternative routes. Officials have not given an estimate for when the disposal operation will conclude.

Advice

Avoid the affected area Feb. 21 until authorities give the all clear. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before beginning journeys; make alternative travel arrangements in advance if necessary.
