Latin America: Environmental activists to demonstrate across the region Sept. 24
Activists to hold climate change-related protests in multiple locations throughout Latin America, Sept. 24; localized disruptions likely.
Event
Environmental activists affiliated with several organizations plan to hold protests Sept. 24 in locations throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean as part of the Global Climate Strike. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand policies to combat climate change as well as other social and economic challenges. Some of the largest demonstrations are likely to be held in the following cities:
Bogota, Colombia: Parque Nacional, 15:00
Cali, Colombia: Boulevard del Rio, 15:00
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Largo do Carioca, 16:00
San Jose, Costa Rica: Legislative Assembly, 16:00
San Juan, Puerto Rico: South side of the Capitol, 16:00
Santiago, Chile: Gabriela Mistral Center (GAM), 17:00
Heightened security is likely in the vicinity of the demonstrations, especially those planned near government buildings. Localized transport and business disruptions are also probable. Clashes are unlikely, especially considering that the main organizing groups hope to attract large numbers of schoolchildren to highlight the interests of future generations with regard to climate change.
