Laos: National Day celebrations likely nationwide Dec. 2

Laos to mark National Day Dec. 2. Largest events likely in Vientiane. Tight security almost certain at event sites nationwide.

Informational

Event

Laos will celebrate its 46th National Day, a nationwide public holiday, Dec. 2. The largest events will probably occur in Vientiane; likely program sites in the capital include the Pha That Luang Temple, the Presidential Palace, and Patuxay Monument Park. Smaller gatherings could occur in other urban centers, such as Luang Prabang, Pakse, Phonsavan, and Savannakhet. Events will probably be significantly smaller than in previous years due to COVID-19 controls. Government office and business closures are likely Dec. 2.

Authorities will almost certainly heighten security nationwide, especially near event locations, prominent celebration sites, and transport hubs as a precaution. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely at event locations and transport centers. Officials may increase health checks at program sites and other crowded places as part of COVID-19 protocols. Petty crime, such as theft and pickpocketing, typically heightens during public holidays.

Advice

Exercise caution near event sites. Plan for transport disruptions. Remain polite and cooperative if stopped by security personnel for security and health checks. Closely guard valuables in crowded areas. Heed all official security and traffic advisories. Confirm all official and business appointments Dec. 2.
