Sri Lanka: Indefinite curfew in Rambukkana, Kegalle District, as of April 20 after violent clashes during fuel-related protests

Police impose indefinite curfew in Rambukkana, Sri Lanka, as of April 20 after violent clashes. Additional protests possible.

Informational

Event

An indefinite curfew is affecting Rambukkana, Kegalle District, as of April 20, after clashes between police and demonstrators left one protester dead and at least 24 others wounded the previous day. Activists had blocked the Main line railway tracks in Rambukkana for over 15 hours and burned tires to denounce a fresh fuel price hike amid prevailing shortages. The incident marked the first time security forces used live ammunition to disperse protesters since anti-government demonstrations over an ongoing economic crisis began in March.

Enhanced security measures, as well as business and transport disruptions, are likely during and immediately after the curfew. Police typically permit emergency movement and essential purchases during allocated time slots in curfew areas. Entry and exit controls and restrictions on nonessential business operations are almost certain.

Additional protests may materialize in the area, especially if curfew orders are prolonged or more hospitalized demonstrators pass away. Officials will likely monitor gatherings and may forcibly disperse disruptive gatherings. Protestors may engage in arson and vandalism and clash with police, prompting further violence.

Rambukkana is approximately 27 km (16.8 miles) west of Kandy.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the threat of further violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Allow additional travel time near large gatherings. Confirm transport schedules and business appointments in advance. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities, including curfew orders.
