Labor unions plan to hold rallies nationwide May 1 to commemorate International Workers' Day. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has announced rallies in eight provinces. The start times are not clear.

  • Eastern Cape: Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London, Raymond Mhlaba Sports Center in Gqeberha, Mthata 2010 Stadium, and the Indoor Sports Center in Queenstown.

  • Free State: Caleb Motshabi Stadium in Trompsburg.

  • KwaZulu-Natal: Esikhawini TVET College Sports Field in Empangeni.

  • Limpopo: Makhuvha Stadium in Thohoyandou.

  • Mpumulanga: Puma Stadium in Witbank, Joseph Nhlane Hall in Bethal, and Oewersag Hall in Mbombela.

  • North West: Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

  • Northern Cape: Dicky Mxolisi Jacobs Stadium in Upington.

  • Western Cape: Langa Stadium.

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) also plans to gather at locations nationwide.

  • Eastern Cape: Dan Qeqe Stadium in Gqeberha from 10:00.

  • Free State: Indoor Sport Center near the Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein from 10:00.

  • Gauteng: Union Buildings in Pretoria (Tshwane) from 10:00.

  • Limpopo: Lebowakgomo Civic Center from 10:00.

  • North West: Civic Center in Rustenburg from 09:00.

  • Western Cape: Grand Parade from 11:00.

Additional gatherings are possible in cities and towns across the country. Sports stadiums and community halls and fields are likely gathering locations. Events are likely to attract hundreds to a few thousand people. Security forces are likely to deploy to manage gatherings. Violence is unlikely. Road travel disruptions are likely on routes leading to and from gathering points.

In South Africa, the International Workers' Day public holiday falls on May 2. Some related events are possible on this date as well. Private and public sector operation disruptions are likely.
