Unionized workers to strike and protest nationwide May 24 in Argentina. Disruptions likely. Avoid protests.

Informational

Event

Activists affiliated with the Association of State Workers (Asociacion de Trabajadores del Estado, ATE) and other unions plan a 24-hour strike and associated protests in Argentina May 24. In Buenos Aires, protesters will gather from 12:00 May 24 at the junction of Avenida de Mayo and Avenida 9 de Julio. Gatherings are also likely in Cordoba, Rosario, and other main cities. Participants will gather to make several labor-related demands and oppose the government's deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

While the protests are likely to be largely peaceful, there will probably be an increased police presence near the protests. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are probable throughout the day near protest sites.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-government building. Seek alternate routes if main roads are blocked. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
