Armenia: Opposition activists likely to protest in Yerevan and occasionally nationwide through early June /update 4

Opposition activists are likely to protest in Yerevan and occasionally nationwide in Armenia through early June.

Warning

Event

Opposition activists will likely continue to demonstrate through at least early June for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. They oppose his handling of ongoing peace negotiations with Azerbaijan relating to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory. To date, demonstrations have primarily focused on Yerevan; however, opposition leaders have called for nationwide protests May 28. The primary event is likely to remain in Yerevan. Protesters will gather at France Square during the late afternoon and early evening. Demonstrators also blocked the Yerevan to Seva route near Charentsavan, May 27. Police deployed to disperse the gathering.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to all significant gatherings. Demonstrators are likely to gather near prominent government buildings, city centers, and major routes. In Yerevan, protesters will likely continue to gather in or near Freedom Square, France Square, Republic Square, and Garegin Nzhdehi Square. Participants typically march through city streets and have, during previous protests, attempted to blockade roads, as well as entrances to Metro stations and access to individual Metro trains. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out at any demonstrations. Police may arrest unruly activists and could resort to riot-control measures, such as tear gas and water cannon; bystanders are unlikely to be directly targeted in any violence but would face an indirect threat of harm.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. If violence breaks out, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure location. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
