Argentina: Transport disruptions likely amid protest march in downtown Buenos Aires June 8

Transport disruptions likely in downtown Buenos Aires, Argentina, June 8 as protesters stage march to demand lower food prices.

Informational

Event

Transport disruptions are likely in downtown Buenos Aires over the coming hours as activists affiliated with several organizations, including the Class-conscious and Combative Current (Corriente Clasista y Combativa, CCC) trade union, have gathered for a protest march at the Obelisco June 8. The purpose of the action is to demand lower food prices. Protesters aim to march toward the Coordinator of the Food Products Industries (Coordinadora de las Industrias de Productos Alimenticios, COPAL) building.

While the action has so far remained largely peaceful, there will probably be an increased police presence along the march route. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized business disruptions are also likely in protest-affected parts of Buenos Aires over the coming hours.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Seek alternative routes to circumvent transport disruptions. Do not attempt to drive through protester-erected roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them instead before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations in protest-affected areas. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
