Canada: Climate activists likely to continue holding protests in parts of British Columbia through early July /update 1

Environmentalist protests likely to continue in parts of British Columbia, Canada, through early July. Clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Activists affiliated with the environmental group Save Old Growth are likely to continue holding protests in several locations in British Columbia, through at least early July, to demand a ban on old-growth logging in the province. Although organizers do not announce specific actions in advance, members of the group have disrupted and are likely to continue disrupting critical infrastructure in the city of Vancouver and throughout Vancouver Island, including in the cities of Victoria and Nanaimo. Activists will probably block major roads, bridges, and highways and hold rallies outside government offices.

Significant transport and business disruptions are possible near any protests that may materialize; clashes between protesters and police or among groups with opposing views cannot be ruled out.

Context

The recent protests began in early June. Activists have blocked major roads and bridges, including the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver, on June 22. Demonstrators also plastered a government office building in Victoria with cedar shavings and wheat paste on June 21. Similar protests are likely to continue. Almost 20 climate activists have recently been arrested.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Do not attempt to cross protester roadblocks; seek alternative routes or wait for the police to clear the obstruction. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed instructions from authorities.
