Brazil: Authorities confirm death of US national in Rio de Janeiro Aug. 12

The US Embassy in Brazil confirmed the death of a US national in Rio de Janeiro Aug. 12. The victim was shot by a stray bullet inside an apartment in the Cascadura neighborhood of northern Rio de Janeiro, Aug. 9. The individual died three days later from the injuries in the Samaritano Botafogo Hospital.

Context

The individual was shot by a stray bullet during a shooting between criminal gangs on Fuba Hill (Morro do Fuba), in the Cascadura neighborhood Aug. 9. At least two other people inside public buses near the area were also hit by stray bullets. Armed clashes involving rival criminal groups and the security forces are not uncommon in neighborhoods in the north of Rio de Janeiro.
