Additional armed clashes between the Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) and anti-junta groups will likely occur in Paletwa Township, southern Chin State, as of Sept. 1. Fighting with the ethnically-based armed group Arakan Army (AA) has reportedly involved artillery strikes. The skirmishes have forced around 1,000 locals to evacuate the Abaungtha, Kyetyetkaing, Namada, Tonemawa, and Yemawa areas of the township.
Authorities will likely maintain heightened security in the affected areas in the coming days. Localized transport disruptions are probable, especially if further skirmishes occur. The military may suspend internet and telecommunications services in areas affected by fighting. Militant groups may also increase their patrols in the region.
The impact area is around 120 km (75miles) north of Sittwe, Rakhine State.
Context
There are increased tensions and clashes between regime forces and the AA in Rakhine and southern Chin states as of September 2022 following retaliatory killings and detainment of the two sides' soldiers. The increase in fighting has occurred despite the informal ceasefire that the AA and the military agreed on, November 2020, and the relative lack of large-scale armed clashes in Rakhine and southern Chin states following the February 2021 military coup in comparison to other states and regions in Myanmar.
