Transport disruptions ongoing Oct. 10 after second bridge collapses on BR-319 highway south of Manaus, Amazonas State, Brazil.

Informational

Event

Overland travel disruptions are ongoing in Amazonas State as of early Oct. 10 following the collapse of the Autaz Mirim River Bridge on the BR-319 highway, about 22 km (14 miles) southeast of Manaus on Oct. 8. The incident follows a Sept. 28 collapse of the nearby Curuca Bridge, also on the BR-319. Officials have stated that they intend to permit boats to help ferry traffic across the river; land transport between Manaus and the rest of Brazil will likely be severely affected. Reports suggest that the bridge may be reopened by Oct. 15, although delays are possible. No cause for the recent bridge collapses has been released. Reports already indicate shortages of goods dependent on truck delivery in Manaus.

Disruptions to overland transit and shipment are almost certain over the coming days. Resulting business disruptions are likely. Shortages of truck-delivered goods in Manaus are likely.

Advice

Avoid driving on the BR-319 south of Manaus if possible. Arrange for alternative personal transportation. Plan on shipping disruptions if moving goods by truck; reconfirm deliveries and arrange alternative transport if necessary. Monitor local media for updates. Heed the instructions of authorities. Secure necessary supplies.
