Transport, supply, and possible power disruptions Oct. 11 after bridges collapse on BR-319 highway south of Manaus, Amazonas State, Brazil.

Informational

Event

The Amazonas State government has declared a state of emergency in Careiro da Varzea, Careiro Castanho, and Manaquiri as of Oct. 11, after two bridges collapsed in the last two weeks, severing much of Amazonas from overland transport with the rest of Brazil. The emergency declaration is intended to address growing food and medical supply shortages due to the incident, as well as possible power outages in the area affecting approximately 100,000 people.

Overland travel disruptions are ongoing, as the BR-319 is closed until further notice. The Curuca Bridge collapsed on Sept. 28, killing four people and injuring 14, while the nearby Autaz Mirim River Bridge fell on Oct. 8, with no reported casualties; both are approximately 22 km (14 miles) southeast of Manaus. Officials have stated that they intend to permit boats to help ferry traffic across the river; land transport between Manaus and the rest of Brazil will likely be severely affected. Reports suggest that the bridge may be reopened by Oct. 15, although delays are possible. No cause for the recent bridge collapses has been released.

Disruptions to overland transit and shipment are almost certain over the coming days. Resulting business disruptions are likely. Shortages of truck-delivered goods in the area, particularly food and medical supplies, are likely. Disruptions to medical care and power outages are possible.

Careiro da Varzea is approximately 23 km (14 miles) east by southeast of Manaus. Careiro Castanho is approximately 85 km (53 miles) south by southwest of Manaus. Manaquiri is approximately 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Manaus.

Advice

Arrange for alternative personal transportation. Plan on shipping disruptions if moving goods by truck; reconfirm deliveries and arrange alternative transport if necessary.
