COP27 Summit to take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, Nov. 6-18. Increased security and localized transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Egyptian authorities will likely increase security measures in Sharm el-Sheikh to prepare for the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) from Nov. 6-18. More than 35,000 delegates are expected to attend the event, including over 100 heads of state.

The Sharm el-Sheikh International Convention Center (SHICC) has been designated as the Blue Zone, considered UN territory and subject to international law. Access will be permitted for UN-accredited persons only. To accommodate the growing number of stakeholders, the Egyptian government will establish a Green Zone in the Peace Park Botanical Garden, across the street from the Blue Zone. The Green Zone will host businesses, youth, civil and indigenous societies, academia, and artists during side events.

Protests in front of or around the venue are unlikely. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's government has de facto banned all demonstrations. While there have been no specific threats to the COP27 summit, large gatherings of world leaders could pose an attractive target for militant groups. Authorities will likely increase security in and around the summit venue and surrounding areas in the days leading up to the event. Additional security measures, including checkpoints and road closures, are likely along all major routes around Sharm el-Sheikh. Increased demand and security measures at the Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport (SSH) will likely result in air travel disruptions.

Advice

Consider avoiding nonessential travel to Sharm el-Sheikh during the conference to mitigate disruptions. Check route status and public transport schedules before departure and allow additional travel time. Due to the increased demand, book accommodations well in advance.
