Greece: Maritime workers at Port of Piraeus near Athens striking Oct. 25

Unionized workers at Port of Piraeus in Athens, Greece, striking Oct. 25. Disruptions to port operations likely.

Warning

Event

Workers at the Port of Piraeus are observing a union-led 24-hour strike Oct. 25. Participants are demanding the withdrawal of the revised Code of Private Maritime Law, and the renewal and implementation of the Collective Labor Agreements, which includes increases in wages. As part of the strike, workers will not handle containers at piers II and III. Additionally, ferries will not depart from the port area; arriving ferries remain unaffected.

Striking workers are currently protesting near the power station in the port area. At 12:00, workers intend to march to the Piraeus SEP Container Station to honor a worker who died at the port. A separate rally is also underway in Karaiskaki Square in central Athens. Heightened security and localized ground travel disruptions are likely near both strike-related gatherings.

Disruptions to port operations, including general cargo services, are almost certain during the strike. Lingering shipping delays could persist after the action ends as port workers clear any backlogs.

Advice

Confirm maritime shipments and port-handling operations in Piraeus Port Oct. 25-26. Exercise caution near the port area; avoid any potential protests.
