Protesters are blocking highways and key routes across several states in Brazil as of early Oct. 31. Blockades have been reported in at least eight states, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, Goias, Mato Grosso, Para, Parana, and Rio Grande do Sul. Demonstrators are protesting the election of Luis Inacio Lula da Silva as president.

The routes blocked by protesters as of early Oct. 31 include:

  • Sao Paulo: BR-153 in Sao Jose do Rio Preto.

  • Rio de Janeiro: Via Dutra in Barra Mansa.

  • Goias: BR-060 Highway in Anapolis and BR-153 Highway in Itumbiara.

  • Santa Catarina: Several sections of BR-101 Highway, BR-280 Highway, and BR-470 Highway. Protesters have also gathered along BR-116, BR-153, and BR-282 Highways.

  • Rio Grande do Sul: Several sections of ERS-122, BR-285, BR-116 Highways are blocked. Protests also ongoing on ERS-463, BR-470, BR-158, and BR-153 Highways.

  • Mato Grosso: Several sections of BR-163 Highway have been blocked. Protests also reported on BR-364 in Cuiaba and BR-070 in Varzea Grande.

  • Para: BR-163 in Santarem.

  • Parana: PR-317 in Maringa.

Protesters may also gather in other locations across the country in the coming hours and days. Officials are likely to deploy security personnel to all protest sites. Clashes between demonstrators and police are possible if protesters are overly disruptive or ignore official orders to disperse. Severe disruptions to intra-and inter-city transport services are possible.
