Bangladesh: Authorities extend tourist travel ban directive in parts of Bandarban District, Chittagong Division, through Dec. 4 /update 4

Authorities amend tourist travel ban in parts of Chittagong Division, Bangladesh, through Dec. 4 amid ongoing security operation.

Warning

Event

Authorities are continuing a temporary ban on tourist travel to the Rowangchhari and Ruma upazilas in Bandarban District through Dec. 4. The curbs started Oct. 18 due to an ongoing security operation against insurgents; the restrictions were later extended to the Alikadam and Thanchi upazilas. The measures are no longer active in Alikadam and Thanchi. Extensions and/or expansions of the tourist ban are possible.

Authorities will maintain heightened security in the affected areas. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible. Isolated clashes between security forces and suspected militants cannot be ruled out.

Context

Bandarban District has historically been plagued by insurgent activity; multiple foreign governments routinely advise their citizens against nonessential travel to the district. The current security operation is not necessarily indicative of a further escalation in regional security risks, which remain high.

Advice

Exercise a high degree of caution if operating in Bandarban District. Register and maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Stay away from windows. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
